Saratoga Clay Arts Center’s Schacht Gallery presents RED, a national invitational exhibition in honor of Valentine’s Day, comprised of utilitarian works by 10 artists from across the country, all made with the red earthenware clay body that many clay enthusiasts know and love – terracotta. The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 1st with an opening reception from 5-7pm and runs through March 15, 2020.
RED features artists who are primarily using terracotta or other iron-rich clay bodies to make their work. While terracotta might be thought of by some as a “lesser” clay body in the hierarchy of clays, those who use it do so because they love the depth and richness of color, the versatility of surface options, and its lush history as a source of expression for many cultures since the dawn of humankind. As February is the month for love, with Valentine’s Day as its heyday, Saratoga Clay Arts Center wanted to share these artists’ love of RED with everyone.
The exhibition will feature a wide spectrum of approaches to the low fire clay body, with a focus on utilitarian works by ten emerging, mid-career and established ceramic artists from Eastern United States and Canada, including Naomi Clement (Canada), Mary Cloonan (MD), Alexandra Fitzgerald (NY), Shanna Fliegel (MA), Arthur Halvorsen (MA), Martina Lantin (Canada), Jeremy Randall (NY), Justin Rothshank (PA), Lauren Sandler (PA) and Adero Willard (MA).
