Kids&Clay - Summer 2015 CLay Programs

Have FUN and EXPLORE your creativity in clay this summer!
We are offering 16 diffferent, week-long, sessions this year. Each session is half-day, either morning or afternoon. Come have fun and explore the world of clay. Learn a wide variety of techniques including: Pinch pots, slab projects, simple pieces on the wheel, as well as, glazing and firing techniques. With a maximum of 12 kids per session, you'll receive both group and individual instruction at your own skill level. Beginners are welcome. Our experienced instructors will offer patient encouragement and guidance to make your experience both magical and exciting. Open to all skill levels ages 7 - 16

As always, siblings will receive an extra 10% off. Someone in the family must be a Member for your child to attend summer sessions. You can always join during camp registration for $35.

Using hand building techniques kids will create a set of tableware that will be functional and enriching for life at home. Kids will create functional cups and saucers, sets of plates, and bowls using slabs, coils and pinching techniques. Decorations will be used to personalize the work.

Wheel Boot Camp I Afternoons

Students will learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel: centering the clay, pulling up the walls, and shaping the clay. They will gain a basic foundation of form and function while learning to throw simple cylinder and bowl forms on the potter’s wheel to create various cups, mugs and bowls. Basic techniques of decoration and glaze application will be explored. Attention to detail and craftsmanship will be emphasized and creativity encouraged.

Characters, Cartoons, and Clay Mornings

Create and build your favorite character (from a story, cartoon or movie) with clay. Or, use your imagination to create and build your very own fictional character. Learn basic anatomical proportions and how to make faces with different expressions.

Wheel & Raku Afternoons

This week will be your introduction to the Potter's Wheel and the Raku firing process. You will learn the basic wheel techniques, focus on creating different forms and prepare your creations for a Raku firing on Friday.

Coil Pots & Tiles Mornings

Make multiple coil pots and tiles from slabs rolled out of clay. You will learn many different hand building techniques by adding clay in smaller slabs and coils for details, textures and depth. The coil pots and tiles will look great to display and use in your home!

Monsters, Inc. Mornings

Learn the basics of various hand building techniques while creating your favorite Monsters, Inc. character or make a monster, gargoyle or creature of your own design. It can be happy, sad, angry, scary, or any way you can imagine it! We will use the same technique that the artists have been using for 500 years as we carve and build your favorite monster.

Since the beginning of time, human beings have created images on cave walls, symbols and carvings that remain to speak their stories thousands of years later. Create your own platter and serving bowl with simple shape molds and hand building techniques, then apply patterns and decorations using stamps, carvings, and personal marks to tell your story in high fired, stoneware clay. Underwater Creatures Mornings

In this fun-filled class students will shape clay into artistic underwater sea life. Then by using your imagination you will create your own undiscovered sea creatures. The creatures will be decorated with texture and designs, then glazed and fired.

African Mask Making Mornings

Make really cool African masks from slabs rolled out of clay. This hand-building class will explore a variety of techniques and ideas for creating African Masks. We will start by learning about different African cultures, styles of masks and what they mean. Next, using slabs of clay you'll create the face of your mask using basic shapes and tools. They will be glazed and fired to complete.

Jewelry Making - Pendants & Beads Mornings

Learn to make beautiful jewelry.  Explore the many ways you can use clay to design and create jewelry using carving, stamping and glazing. Time will be spent making pendents, beads and even earrings. Fill your jewelry box and make gifts for Mom and Sis. All skill levels welcome.

Expand your knowledge of throwing techniques as you improve your technical skills and diversify your repertoire of forms, surface decoration, and glazing methods. You will focus on the development of beautifully balanced pots that work both technically and visually, while refining your skills at forming cohesive pots including handles, feet, lids, rims, and alteration techniques. Designed for those who have taken several wheel-throwing classes.
